Born and Baptised in Kingsdown, Kent, the fifth of ten children of William & Emily Kennard, Simon was married six months before his 30th Birthday to Mary Ann Pink at Rodmersham and their first three children were born in Kent. The family then packed up and moved to the other side of the world in the search of better opportunities. Five more children were born in their adopted homeland in New Zealand, including a set of twins in 1883. Simon worked as a Labourer in the Waianiwa district of Southland and the family grew and prospered. Simon lived to a ripe old age at eighty one years and died in June 1920 while Mary Ann survived him by more than two years. Both were buried in Wallacetown.
